Welcome New Families

March 17, 2017 (updated May 16 for round 2)

Dear New Dr. William L. Cobb Families,

Welcome to Cobb! Our community welcomes all the new families to our school. We look forward to getting to know you, and are especially excited to have a new group of pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students joining us this year! I am extremely honored to be your principal at Dr. William L. Cobb Elementary, a school for equity in this ever-changing world. As principal over the past two years, we have seen monumental gains in student learning and school culture and climate, and we look forward to continued progress this upcoming year. I would like to introduce myself and also highlight important information for the beginning of school.

I have been a teacher and principal for 14 years, most recently as the assistant principal of Gateway Middle School, a local charter school where several Cobb alumni have shined. My educational philosophy is rooted in my firmly held belief that all children can learn. Schools should empower children to reach their fullest potential by providing an environment that is safe, orderly, and communicates high academic and behavioral expectations. I prioritize building strong relationships with parents, guardians, staff, and students. This is the only way that we can truly collaborate with one another to do what is best for our children. Spending time with students is meaningful and rewarding, and is the true reason why I love working in schools.

In addition to meeting your child, I would like to meet you! I encourage you, if you have not already, to attend a school tour. Will will also have the last tour of the year on May 24 at 9am. Please call Cobb or email me to RSVP. Please come to our Family Work Day and Potluck Picnic on Saturday, August 19 from 10am to 2pm at Cobb before school begins on Monday, August 21, 2017.

Remember that you must come to the school in person to register your child by May 24, 2017. Our office is open 8:15am to 3:00pm on school days.

Please return the following important forms to Cobb by the first day of school, August 21:

  • Emergency card

  • Health Information Form

  • Media Access Form (optional)

If you have questions or need more information, please get in touch. Starting a new school is exciting, but can be overwhelming, so we’re here to help. You can reach me and all of the school staff, including our Family Liaison Ms. Lissa Collier – who can connect you with current Cobb families – by calling the school at 415-749-3505 during school hours or emailing us at sch525@sfusd.edu. You can also email me directly at slifec@sfusd.edu. Please remember that our school main office will be closed for summer from May 27 to August 13, and we will not be able to reply immediately. You can also follow us on Twitter, @CobbTigers, and on Facebook: facebook.com/CobbElementary.

Family Work Day and Potluck Picnic: Please join us on Saturday, August 19 from 10am to 2pm for our annual work day and potluck. Family Work Day is an opportunity for you and your child to meet other Cobb families and help teachers get ready for the first day of the school year. Bring a dish to share!

First Day of School, August 21: On the first day of school, you will find your child’s name located on class assignment lists posted at the school. Teachers will be on the yard to greet you and help guide your child to their correct spot on the yard for morning announcements. You are welcome to stay for morning announcements at 8:35am. At 8:40am, I ask that you let our teachers take students to their classrooms to get our school year going. Please join me in our Community Room (Room 150 on the lower-level PreK yard) if you would like to chat after students are in their classrooms. Students must attend the first 10 days of school or they will lose their assignment. You must notify the office if there is an emergency, illness, or special situation if your child cannot attend school within the first 10 days of school.
