Welcome New Families

March 12, 2018

Dear New Cobb Families,

Welcome to Dr. William L. Cobb Elementary School, a school for equity in this ever-changing world. We are especially happy to welcome our new TK and kindergarten families! This letter explains important information about next steps now that you have received your assignment for Cobb.

Cobb’s educational philosophy is rooted in our firmly held belief that all children can learn. We believe that schools should empower children to reach their fullest potential by providing an environment that is safe, orderly, and communicates high academic and behavioral expectations. Building strong relationships with parents, guardians, staff, and students is how we truly collaborate with one another to do what is best for our children.

Registration: Now that your child has been assigned to Cobb, please register your child at the school in person by April 6. If you do not register by April 6, your child will lose this placement. We encourage all families to register their child, even if you plan on submitting a second school assignment application. To register your child, please come to the Cobb main office between the hours of 8:40am and 4:00pm the week of March 19-23 or the week of April 2-6 (the office will be closed for spring break the week of March 26-30).

School Tours: We want to meet you! I encourage you, if you have not already, to attend a school tour. We have two remaining school tours scheduled: Thursday, March 22, at 9am and Tuesday, April 3, at 1pm. Please register for tours here.

New Student Orientation: Families and students are invited to our new school registration on Thursday, May 31 from 4-5pm. No need to sign up in advance. Meet the teachers and other Cobb families, ask questions, and learn how you can prepare for a successful start at Cobb!

Cobb Events: You can meet more of our Cobb community at our Spring Carnival on Friday, June 1. As summer vacation comes to an end, please come to our Family Work Day and Potluck Picnic on Saturday, August 18 from 10am to 2pm.

Class Assignments and First Day of School: The first day of school is August 20. You will find your child’s name located on class lists posted on the outside and inside of the building that morning. Teachers will be on the yard to greet you and help guide your child to their correct spot on the yard for morning announcements. Teachers will then lead students to their classrooms. Students must attend the first ten days of school or they will lose their assignment. Notify the office if there is an emergency, illness, or special situation if your child cannot attend school within the first ten days of school.

School Hours: 8:40 to 2:40pm. School yard opens at 8:15.

Extended Care and Beacon Center: Cobb is excited to be a Beacon Center, managed by the Buchanan YMCA, starting in 2018. We hope to extend and enrich our current after-school program that runs 2:40 to 6:00pm for the upcoming year. Applications for the after-school program can be found on our website or by visiting the Buchanan YMCA at 1530 Buchanan Street. We are also looking into adding a before-school program so that students can be dropped off earlier than 8:15. We will update you as we have more news to share. In addition to on-site afterschool care, we coordinate with many nearby off-site after-school programs programs and we can support you in registering for them.

Uniforms: All students are expected to wear white and navy Monday through Thursday. Free dress is on Friday.

Breakfast and Lunch: All students at Cobb receive free breakfast and lunch, regardless of whether your child is eligible for free or reduced lunch. A simple breakfast is available to all students in the classrooms every morning. Lunch is served in the cafeteria and includes a vegetarian option daily. You will be asked to fill out financial information at a later time using an online tool to establish whether your child qualifies for free or reduced lunch, but this is for informational purposes for the district only, and you will not need to set up an account to manage payments for lunches.

PTA: The PTA (Parent Teacher Association) at Dr. William L. Cobb Elementary is an important way parents and extended families get involved with our school. We encourage families to join the PTA and help build our community. More information about the PTA and PTA-sponsored activities can be found here.

We look forward to working with you and your child in this coming school year! Please know you can contact me (slifec@sfusd.edu or 415-749-3505) with any questions or thoughts.

With much respect,

Mr. Chad Slife, Principal
