Agenda: Vote to DISSOLVE the Dr. William Cobb Elementary PTA

The Cobb PTA formed in 2017 and has sponsored events such as the Harvest Festival, popsicle parties, and the Spring Carnival. The PTA also fundraises and pays for school and classroom supplies. It has raised over $22,000 to date.

Because of lack of parent leadership, we have not been able to function properly as an independent not-for-profit organization. We do not have parent volunteers to lead the Cobb PTA, especially going forward into the 2019-20 school year. To dissolve the PTA, we must have one last association meeting to vote to dissolve our chapter of the PTA.

All Cobb parents, community members, and staff are invited to attend this meeting. Current 2018-19 PTA members will be allowed to vote on dissolution at the meeting. If you would like to vote in this meeting, join the PTA by March 10.

What does this mean going forward?

The Cobb PTA will continue to function and fund school events through April 2019. After that, funds will be transferred to the school district to be managed by Mr. Funk as the Cobb principal. Any end-of-year events such as graduation and the spring carnival will be funded and organized by the school staff. Most fundraising going forward will not be possible.

Can we save the PTA?

Yes! If at least five parents or community members volunteer before April 10 to lead the PTA, we can vote to continue the PTA. We need leaders willing to:

  • Plan and organize PTA meetings and events
  • Organize and manage fundraisers
  • Manage all financial aspects such as budgeting, bookkeeping, check writing, tax filings, etc.
  • Lead and participate in meetings at least monthly
  • Ensure that the PTA is being properly run according to the bylaws
  • Lead and mentor new parents to take over leadership roles for the following school year

FAQ

What is a PTA?

The Cobb PTA is a not-for-profit organization that supports the students and families of Cobb. We raise money and volunteer for the school. The PTA is run by an executive board, made up of the principal, a teacher, and elected officers, who are usually parents. Committee chairs and members organize events and special initiatives. We raise money and manage grant money for the school and then fund programs and activities.

Why join the PTA?

Your dues go to support the national and state-level PTA organizations, which provide the infrastructure and support to do what we do at the school level. More importantly, as a member, you can vote at Cobb PTA association meetings and have your voice heard. You will vote on budget, board members, and other important decisions at a few meetings during the year. In other words, as a member, you have a say in how our money is spent and who is running the organization. If we don’t have members, we don't have a PTA. The 2018-19 membership drive is coming soon.

What does the PTA do at Cobb?

The PTA organizes the Harvest Festival, Carnival, movie nights, and other fun events at the school. PTA volunteers help with various school events, in classrooms, and day-to-day around the school. We also provide financial and volunteer support for class programs and special projects.

Why should I get involved in the Cobb PTA?

We need your help—really! Cobb is a small school with busy families. It’s hard to make time for meetings at school, or volunteer. We get it. The PTA is a small and new organization with a few parents doing the vast majority of the work to keep it going. We need more people to jump in and help us figure things out. No experience necessary! Being an active member of the PTA is great way to meet other Cobb families, stay in the loop with school news, and learn new skills. If you want to be involved, we’ll figure out how to make it work with your schedule.

Become a Member!

All parents, teachers, and community members are encouraged to join the Cobb PTA. By joining the PTA, you are showing your support for the school and you can vote at PTA meetings.

Membership dues at $5 per year. You can pay by cash or check by using a membership envelope, available at the school office, and putting it in the blue PTA box in the office. You can also join online.
